The quartz specimen deposit at Boekenhoutshoek area, South Africa yielded literally thousands of colorless, smoky, and pale amethyst “cactus quartz” clusters over a two decade period. Specimens of this size, perfection, and strong amethyst-color, however, are exceedingly rare. Mineral collector’s are fascinated by the habit and overall “sparkle” of the cactus quartz crystal clusters. Cactus Quartz is characterized by having a prismatic quartz crystal at its core and having its prism faces completely covered with tiny, druzy quartz crystals oriented perpendicularly to the long axis of the prismatic quartz crystal … the resembling the “spines” on a cactus plant. The play of light from the thousands of small terminal faces on the lustrous druzy quartz crystals is captivating. As is evident from the photograph of this specimen, occasionally the underlying prismatic quartz crystals have sceptered terminations making them even more interesting. This high-quality specimen is unrepaired, but, does have one (difficult to spot) incomplete termination on one of the prismatic quartz crystals.Ex - Dave Matak Collection
