Discovered in 2001 in the famous "Porcupine Pocket" (named in allusion to the unbelievably intricate and 3-dimensional specimens it contained), this world-class elbaite tourmaline specimen is from the Pederneira claim in Sao Jose da Safira, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Featuring a spray of electric-blue tourmaline crystals to over 22 cm perched on a matrix of three large deep-blue crystals, this specimen has unbelievable aesthetics and an undeniable "wow factor" in person. The Pederneira claim has become famous with collectors around the world for it's incredible tourmaline crystal specimens, but nature really couldn't have composed this specimen any nicer. The deep saturated blue 'indicolite' color is unusual for tourmaline from the Pederneira mine, and a well-formed 9 cm clear quartz crystal and minor purple lepidolite mica really set this piece off. One of the top specimens in the noted tourmaline collection of Gerhard Wagner of Germany, this superb specimen would be a high mark in any collection. Annette Slade photo.
