The Sapat Gali deposit in Pakistan's mountainous, rugged Khyber Region is perhaps the world's greatest locality for Peridot, the gem green variety of Forsterite Olivine which has been treasured and sought-after since Biblical times. For thousands of years, the world's best Peridot came from a small island in the Red Sea off the coast of Egypt, Saint John's Island. It was not until the late 1970's when superb, large, gem-quality peridot crystals began appearing on the Western market from the remote Sapat Gali mine. With their rich green color, gemmy interiors, and often large size, peridot crystals from this locale quickly became known as some of the world's best. This is a world-class peridot crystal measuring 8.8 cm tall and almost 6 cm wide, with textbook crystal form and rich, saturated green color. There are large clean gem areas within the crystal which would yield sizable gemstones, but what is truly exceptional about this crystal (in addition to it's HUGE size!) is that it is in pristine condition, and also has good luster for the species. Fine-quality peridot crystals are one of the hardest of the desirable gem minerals to obtain, and this is an exquisite example unlikely to be rivaled soon. Ex. Proctor Family Trust Collection.
