The word “heliodor” is derived from the Greek word Helios, the sun god, acknowledging its yellow color. This gem-quality crystal of greenish-yellow heliodor is from one of the world’s greatest deposits for heliodor at Volodarsk-Volynskii in Ukraine. While there are some ongoing attempts to find more supply of these precious gem crystals, the majority of the Ukrainian heliodor specimens in the market today were harvested prior to the early 2000’s. This specimen is spectacular because of its flawless gem-quality and the very pronounced, complex, geometric solution-etching patterns which are present on the prism and terminal faces of the crystal. The luster of this crystal is “glassy”, the color is a very strong greenish-yellow, and the hundreds of rectangular growth depressions on the crystal’s surfaces due to solution etching are captivating. This unrepaired specimen was previously in the mineral collection of Martin Zinn III and the Matak collection.
