A significant, premier-quality specimen from the Sweet Home Mine. The rhodochrosite crystals on this specimen are so gemmy and transparent that you could read through them; this sort of transparency is exceptional for the Sweet Home. The largest rhodochrosite crystal on this unrepaired specimen measures 2.4 cm on edge and possesses a cherry-red color. The specimen, also, features a light amber-yellow cubic fluorite crystal (1.5 cm) with a strong purple cubic phantom inside and numerous needle-like quartz crystals. Beautiful! The Porcelain Pocket, discovered in early 2000, contained highly lustrous, dark cherry-red rhodochrosite crystals in association with cubic, color-zoned fluorite crystals and small dark-grey, hexagonal prismatic crystals of the mineral apatite. While the rhodochrosite crystals in this pocket were fantastic, the most distinctive feature of this pocket were the dramatic and beautiful “phantoms” or color zones within and upon the fluorite crystals. Amber-yellow fluorite crystals within the Porcelain Pocket frequently exhibited rich-purple colored “phantoms” at the centers of the crystals and an opaque, stark white, porcelain-like color zone preferentially “including” selective faces at their exterior surfaces. The bright white and shiny surfaces on some of these cubic fluorite crystals exhibit a strong resemblance to the white porcelain surfaces in one’s sinks, bathtubs and bathroom tiles. The pocket was named “PORCELAIN POCKET” due to the abundance of these distinctive, white, porcelain-like fluorites.
