The Broken Hill mine in South Afrrica's Northern Cape Province is a classic locale for numerous minerals, especially these amazingly sharp siderite epimorphs after calcite crystals. In an epimorph, crystals on an earlier mineral (calcite in this case) have been overgrown by another species (siderite), and then the original mineral is dissolved, leaving a hollow "mold" of the second species. This is an excellent large example of sharp brown siderite epimorphs after calcite, with a thin druzy overgrowth that adds some nice aesthetic contrast. A choice South Africa Classic from the Proctor Family Trust Collection.
