This is a stunning large azurite crystal from the now-famous Milpillas mine in Sonora, Mexico. The large size of the azurite crystal is noteworthy (almost 7 cm across!), but what is more unusual is the superb luster, midnight-blue color, and pristine condition. Specimens like this make it obvious why many collectors now consider Milpillas mine azurite to be the finest and most aesthetic in the world. The oxide zone (where essentially all the azurite specimens came from) at Milpillas is now mined-out, and fine azurites like this will soon be recognized as 'classics' from a unique find which will go down in history as one of the most important of the century. Dr. Neely's collection contained numerous superb Milpillas azurites, and this is one of the finest. Illustrated in the Midwest Collectors supplement of the Mineralogical Record, pg. 165.
