Locality: Zhaotong Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China
Dimensions: 9.2 x 8 x 7 cm.
Calcite crystals from this region of southern China's Yunnan province are know for their superb clarity and incredibly bright, lustrous faces, resulting in jewel-like specimens in which optically-transparent crystals are placed on contrasting dark matrix. While China has no shortage of superb calcite crystal localities, fine specimens of this style have quickly become the rarest and most desirable Chinese calcites. The crystals are so clear that they cause light passing through them to disperse in a manner that results in rainbow-like flashes of color. The crystals have an elongated prismatic habit very reminiscent of the classic calcites of yesteryear from Egremont, England. A superb Chinese calcite specimen worthy of any collection.
