The Hedgehog Pocket, discovered on August 6th of 1996, was one of the major pockets of the Sweet Home mine, eventually extending over 10 feet and yielding many hundreds of fine rhodochrosite specimens. The “Hedgehog” name came from the large mounds of typical Sweet Home mine “needle quartz” which completely lined the pocket, resembling quartz hedgehogs. These “hedgehogs” were often completely covered in beautiful gemmy red rhodochrosite crystals, along with fluorite, hubnerite, and other minerals. The Hedgehog pocket yielded huge plates of rhodochrosite on quartz to over 200 pounds and ~2 x 1 ½ feet across, truly amazing for the Sweet Home deposit. Overall, the Hedgehog pocket yielded about 1,500 specimens, many of which were offered at the February 1997 Tucson Gem and Mineral Show, to the delight of collectors around the world. This is a premier-quality specimen for the Hedgehog pocket, with dozens of totally gemmy, lustrous, vibrant pinkish-red rhodochrosite crystals associated with contrasting white quartz crystals. The rhodochrosite crystals show superb luster and transparency for this pocket, and are also fairly large compared to most Hedgehog pocket pieces. The specimen is in excellent condition with no repairs or restorations. This is an exceptional Sweet Home mine rhodochrosite worthy of any collection. Ex. Bryan K. Lees Collection # SH-2829, Ex.
