Smithsonite from Namibia's Tsumeb mine has long been considered the world's finest, and occurs there in just about every color and crystal style imaginable. The deep-green Cuprian smithsonites are some of the most prized Tsumeb examples however, and this superb specimen illustrates why that is. With bright, satiny luster and vibrant neon-green color, this easily ranks of the top handful of the many thousands of fine smithsonites produced from the Tsumeb mine. The smithsonite forms distinct rhombohedral crystals and is not botryoidal, but these crystals sort of blend together into a luscious 'carpet' of brilliant green smithsonite. A superb classic for the Tsumeb connoisseur. This specimen was illustrated in the Mineralogical Record, Vol 41, pg. 521. Jeff Scovil photo. Ex - Steve Neely Collection
