The Wutong mine in Wuzhou Prefecture, China is sometimes referred to as the "Chinese Sweet Home Mine", and is known for the distinctive and sometimes world-class rhodochrosite crystals it produced for a brief period from ~2008-2012. This is an outstanding large example featuring a huge single rhodochrosite crystal measuring over 20 cm wide, with vibrant pink to red color and very interesting growth features. The 'core' of the crystal is composed of gemmy red rhodochrosite, which in turn in 'sandwiched' by overgrowths of more pink rhodo. The specimen is a 'floater', crystallized all around, and is completely covered in small purple cubic fluorite crystals on the back. Very few rhodochrosites of this size and quality were found at the Wutong mine (which is now largely mined-out), and despite one professional repair and restoration, this remains in the top 1% of single rhodochrosite crystals found in China, and is an impressive display piece that I believe would enhance almost any collection. A modern Chinese classic from an important locale.
