This outstanding large 'rubellite' tourmaline hails from the famous Tourmaline Queen Mine in Pala, Pala District, San Diego Co., California, USA, and is a behemoth even for this locality which is noted for its large elbaite tourmaline crystals. Measuring 17.4 cm tall and over 8 cm wide, this is a very impressive 'Pala tourmaline', likely from the major finds in the 1970's. While the crystal does have restored areas near the center of the piece, the restoration has been skillfully rendered and the surrounding albite as well as the excellent condition of both terminations (the crystal is doubly-terminated) make this restoration work visually-minimal when viewing the piece. The crystal has a real 'wow factor', especially when one stops and considers that this is an American specimen, not one of the more recent (and abundant) pink tourmalines from Paprok Afghanistan. The wonderful pink color, large size, and doubly-terminated form of this tourmaline all make it a superb old-time example from this iconic locality. Ex - James W. Simpson Collection
