The Spann Collection

Gail and Jim Spann are collectors of fine minerals from around the world. Over the past two decades they have created a world-class, comprehensive collection containing contemporary to classic minerals from all seven continents. They are also collectors of rare mineral books. They truly are one of today’s leading renaissance collectors.

Their home, located outside of Dallas, boasts seventy-two well-lit cases that showcase most of their collection, which is comprised of nearly 20,000 minerals. Their home has become a regular stopping point for mineral collectors, dealers, and curators. A portion of their collection is also on rotation at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas, Texas.

In addition to collecting minerals from dealers and peers, they also enjoy taking every opportunity to dig for fine minerals. In Gail’s words, “We get dirty 4-5 times per year by accepting invitations to dig at productive mines and often take guests along to share the adventure.”

Gail and Jim’s intent is to encourage the interaction of fine mineral collectors of all ages, from all walks of life, and all regions of the globe, while speaking the common language of fine minerals that draws us all together.

The Spann’s serve on the Board of Directors for The Hudson Institute of Mineralogy (Mindat.org). Gail also serves on The Mineralogical Record board and presides over the Board of Directors at the Rice Museum of Rocks & Minerals located near Portland, Oregon.
